Acquire the Mastery of Creating a Thesis

Creating a thesis is a part of the requirements for receiving an academic degree or a professional qualification. But for some higher degrees like PhD or DEng, creating a thesis is the full requirement. Apart from doing research and writing the thesis, student may have to present the thesis before the thesis committee and defend his thesis by facing their questions and queries. Students studying for Degrees whether Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral, have to acquire the mastery of creating a thesis, because this is the last and most important part of their coursework. Apart from this the students develop research, reasoning and writing skills that may be useful in their future careers.

Purpose of the Thesis

Thesis is the document presenting the research work and the findings of an academic, scientist or a professional. In institutions of higher education like colleges and universities degrees are awarded to students for their academic excellence, and the thesis is the final means for evaluating such excellence. Students do their research with the guidance of a supervisor, normally a professor, on a topic selected by them or given by the faculty. In creating a thesis, students are required to present the indings of the research investigation undertaken. Thesis is also referred to as a dissertation or a research paper depending on the country of study, the level of degree study and even as per the study institution’s preference. Sole purpose of the thesis is not getting the degree. It should fulfill the scholastic benchmarks of originality and rigor of empirical research and contribute to the existing knowledge.

Thesis Topic and the Thesis Statement

A good thesis cannot be written on a dull, boring and weak topic. The selection of the topic contributes greatly to the success of the thesis. Always explore extensively and invest time in brainstorming for good thesis ideas before you make the final decision. You can research your topic deeply when it is specific. Don’t settle for a broad topic because broad topics tend to be vague. Sometimes students choose topics that are too broad that scope for multiple number of thesis investigations are contained in it. After you decide on the topic, develop the thesis objectives, thesis questions and the hypothesis. The decisions you make at this stage influence the entire thesis study and therefore each of them should be well thought through. The thesis objectives you set should be achievable. The thesis hypothesis you propose should be measurable and researchable. Similarly the thesis question should be significant and allow for investigating phenomena that is worth exploring. Your tentative choice of research methodologies and data analysis should be linked with these key thesis decisions.

Planing Your Thesis Work

When you are assigned with the task of creating a thesis, a plan must be drawn so that you can complete the thesis in time. The thesis normally takes about six months to complete. Therefore you have to allow adequate time for each task while considering the target date. List all the different tasks involved and set targets for start and the finish of each task. The regular appointments with the supervisor are important to ensure that the project is on right track and in line with thesis requirements.

Tips for the Writing Phase

Selection of the appropriate writing style, formatting system and the structure for the thesis should also be done at the beginning stage of the project. Some tasks can be done simultaneously, saving time and allowing for maximum time for fine tuning the work. Some parts of writing work can progress while you conduct research and data analysis. Here is a tip that you should take to heart. Write your citations and bibliographic entries as you write your draft. DO NOT leave it to last moment. As the writing takes many months, you will find it extremely hard to recall from where the quotes were cited and where to find the reference details. Refer to a good thesis template to get a proper guidance on the different parts of the thesis. Write a thesis abstract and conclude your assignment to create thesis.
